Mixing Tylenol with Motrin you get Vicodin?

Here’s a good question, what do you get if you mix Tylenol with Motrin? One thing is sure, you won’t obtain Vicodin out of this pill combination. Vicodin is a combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Tylenol), and is also available as Vicoprophen mixed with Ibuprophen (which is Motrin).

So by combining Motrin with Tylenol you would get some pain relief but not as much as Vicodin offers – Tylenol will offer some pain relief (and sometimes reduces fever), while Motrin is anti-inflammatory. It’s ok to take them together but not to exceed the amount of Tylenol since large amounts can cause liver damage.

Of all the possible side-effects Vicodin might have, sinus infection is not one of them, so if you experience a sinus infection after taking Vicodin that is due most likely to the cause that led you to take Vicodin rather than the pill itself (for instance if you just had a tooth extracted).

Safe to combine Vicodin and Tylenol PM?

No it’s not safe to combine Vicodin and Tylenol PM. The reason is that Vicodin already contains acetaminophen (which is basically Tylenol), so combining the Vicodin and Tylenol PM would result in taking a higher dose of acetaminophen. Quantities over 4 grams of acetaminophen daily may result in liver problems, so you should avoid taking Vicodin and Tylenol PM together just for this reason. Take one or the other, depending on what the doctor prescribed.

How long does Vicodin stay in your blood?

Vicodin will show up in an urine test if someone took the Vicodin pill less than 72 hours before the actual test. Vicodin however is detected in your blood long after you took the pill.

Depending on the quantity, it’s possible that Vicodin will be detected after a blood test even if up to 30 days passed since you first took Vicodin, so whenever you want to be sure someone is clean for at least 30 days, make them take the blood test.

After having a wisdom tooth pulled, your doctor might recommend taking Vicodin. But if you’re also taking birth control pills, a question arises, will Vicodin affect the birth control pill effect? The answer is probably not, Vicodin won’t reduce the efficiency of your birth control pills, though you should also consult your doctor and ask him this, especially if he prescribed other medicines to you since there are some that might affect the birth control pill effect (such as Cephalexin).

It depends on your weight too, but normally you shouldn’t exceed 4g of acetaminophen (Tylenol) per day. For instance, 5 generic Vicodin pills would give about 2.5 grams of acetaminophen at once, which gets really close to a toxic level of acetaminophen per day. You should never exceed 4 grams of Tylenol per day because you risk having serious liver damage. Also, it’s not recommended to continue getting close to 4grams of Tylenol each day (about 8 generic Vicodin pills), because in time your liver might suffer consequences.

Liver damage could possibly cause liver failure which is a critical thing, since accidental or intentional acetaminophen overdose is one reason why young people end up needing liver transplants or risk dying.

If you take Vicodin for back pains (or other types of pains) for a long period of time (>1 year) and you want to give up using it after taking it for such long time, you should consider the Vicodin withdrawal side-effect.

The Vicodin withdrawal side-effect happens if you stop using it abruptly after a prolonged use, which manifests differently for everyone varying in intensity on the degree of the Vicodin addiction you had. As an example, symptoms of Vicodin withdrawal may grow stronger for 24-72 hours but gradually decline after a period of 7-14 days.

The best way to handle a possible Vicodin withdrawal symptom would be to discuss it first with your doctor, as they may have better advices for you given that he/she knows your health history better. However, one advice would be to slowly cut back using a little at a time, decreasing the amount of Vicodin you take each day by 50% every 4-5 days. Another advice would be to try taking 1 Vicodin pill every 2 days for a week, then 1/2 of a pill every 2 days of a week (in the next week) and so on until you gradually decrease the amount enough to simply quit using Vicodin.

However, as scary as withdrawal seems to be, it doesn’t pose any life risks just some inconveniences. Some possible side-effects during withdrawal might be: Runny nose, profuse sweating, excessive tears, shivering, nausea, sleeplessness, restlessness, tremors, abdominal cramping, bone pains, craving for Vicodin – you might feel some of these symptoms or none.

Another advice would be to have someone there for you to help you go through this (a friend) and help when craving is the strongest will.

Overdose of Vicodin and Prozac

Vicodin, Prozac or other opiates should never be taken without a prescription or in large quantities (an overdose) because they could have fatal side-effects.

Vicodin involves about 3 substances, acetaminophen, hydrocodone and fluoxetine, but out of these ones the most dangerous is acetaminophen. Overdosing Vicodin might result in fatal liver failure because of the acetaminophen, respiratory depression because of the hydrocodone or even respiratory arrest. These should be enough reasons to stick to the prescription your doctor gave you, and not take an overdose of Vicodin. Furthermore, for taking Prozac in large quantities (overdosing) you might get into a coma, so again carefully follow your prescription to avoid unwanted (or fatal) Vicodin/Prozac side-effects.
